From our youngest 18-month old students to our 6-year old kindergartners, we use age-appropriate, play-based curriculums to help students learn important life skills as well as academics.

Teaching Philosophy

The benefits of using age-appropriate, play-based curriculum are numerous:

  • Two nurturing, professional teachers in most classrooms provide a low student-teacher ratio and personal attention for each child.

  • Through play, children in all classes learn important interpersonal skills such as taking turns, negotiating, conflict resolution, sharing, and empathy.

  • Children learn important academic skills such as pre-reading/reading, math, and science concepts through play. We love trial and error open-ended questions, embracing mistakes and encouraging resilience.

  • Focus on helping children develop their Christian faith through an atmosphere of love and concern, Bible stories and all-school Chapel.

  • Daily art projects develop students’ fine motor skills and build strong hands. We focus on the “process” of art versus the “product.”

  • Plenty of recess time (30-40 minutes every day) and our weekly Motor Skills Class, encourage gross motor development such as balance, muscle control, motor planning and physical endurance.

  • Our youngest classroom is filled with love and encouragement. Our nurturing teachers meet the children where they are developmentally and create a sense of safety and security in the classroom. Teachers help the students explore the classroom’s age-appropriate books and toys. Just like our older students, the Bees have an opportunity to complete a daily art project and enjoy books, stories, songs and games based on the theme of the week.

Teachers reinforce important skills such as transitioning from one task to another, taking turns, and what it looks like to work as a team. Our classroom provides numerous sensory opportunities to keep young minds interested and engaged. Through play, we introduce basic colors and shapes, sorting, and other beginning math and language concepts. Hours are shortened in the fall as our Bees develop their school endurance.

Students spend plenty of time at recess and attend Motor Skills and Music Class once a week and Chapel during the Spring semester. Maximum student-teacher ratio is 4:1 with a maximum class size of 8 students.

  • This sweet class is filled with love and encouragement. Our nurturing teachers meet the children where they are developmentally and create a sense of safety and security in the classroom. As our Butterflies grow throughout the school year, teachers encourage side-by-side play to become interactive play. We also work with parents who are potty-training at home to encourage consistent behaviors at school. The Butterflies complete a daily art project and enjoy books, stories, songs and games based on the theme of the week.

Our teachers work with students to help develop important interpersonal skills such as communication, empathy and problem solving. We strive to teach each child to be a responsible learner in a positive and supportive environment. Teachers help build foundational skills through hands-on activities and student-generated projects where they can showcase their imagination, and art.

    Language Arts

We use several different curriculums: All About Reading, Neuhaus and Learning Without Tears (handwriting). All of these are multi-sensory and incorporate a variety of learning styles. We develop a solid understanding of letters and sounds through shared reading and writing, phonics and handwriting. Regular book making and journal writing reinforce these important skills. We also incorporate the Rice Storytelling program where we reinforce literacy and oral language through reading stories, acting out stories and dramatic playtime. Students become storytellers where we create a safe and loving space for their stories to come to life with their classmates.

    Math

We use a multi-sensory, hands-on program utilizing a variety of manipulatives to allow for a greater understanding of number concepts. It’s all about exposure and creating an engaging environment where numbers are part of everyday life; from counting the days we are in school to examining patterns in the world around us.

    Science

We encourage our students to develop an interest in the natural world by discussing a variety of topics about animals, lifecycles, plants, weather and space. We grow plants, watch monarch butterflies transform, and hatch chicken eggs in the spring.

    Social Studies

We are always modeling kindness, empathy and how to be a caring friend. How to advocate for yourself, risk taking, being more independent, which all lead to more self confidence. We also discuss topics such as; voting, presidents, American and Texas symbols.

Students spend a minimum of 40 minutes each day outside and attend Motor Skills twice a week and Music once a week. We also attend an all-school Chapel twice a month where students sing, enjoy a Bible lesson and pray. We eat lunch at school daily. Maximum student ration is 8:1 with a max class size of 16 students.
